3-24-09 Newspaper Articles (B Days)

Today we started class with our punctual piece. We completed a few more vocabulary words looking at two new roots. Here's the definitions if you missed:
Dia (Greek) = across
diameter--(noun) the length of a straight line through the center of an object
dialogue--(noun) a conversation between two or more people
dialect--(noun) a regional variety of language distinguished by features of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation
diatribe--(noun) a bitter and abusive speech or writing

Dom (Latin) = rule
predominant--(adj) being most evident or apparent; leading
dominion--(noun) an area ruled or controlled
domineering--(adj) forcing others to obey
domain--(noun) a field or area over which control is exercised; a sphere of activity, concern, or function

Then we talked about pronoun agreement. Remember everybody is singular so it is paired with he or she! We completed some practice exercises--you'll want to make those up!

Next we talked about Newspaper Writing. We read a newspaper article and talked about the characteristics of Newspaper Writing. In groups you broke down the article we read into its components.

Then you completed the Newspaper Planning Sheet, drafted your article, and completed Peer Review. If you missed class, you are responsible for finding someone in your class to switch papers with.

For Thursday:
1. Get caught up on all genres we've done so far: PowerPoint and Newspaper
2. Bring ALL your research with you so you will have time to work on your Your Choice Genres
