3-31-09: Resume Writing (A Days)

Today we began with our punctual piece. Yes, it was more vocabulary! I want you to have lots of possibilities for words and roots to use in your MG (multi-genre paper).
Here are the definitions of the words for today:

dyna (Greek) = power
dynamo--(noun) a forceful, energetic, productive person
dynamite--(noun) a powerful explosive made using nitroglycerin; anything potentially dangerous
dynasty--(noun) a succession of rulers who are members fo the same family; the period during which a certain family reigns

fid (Latin) = faith
fidelity--(noun) faithfulness; loyalty
confidence--(noun) firm belief; trust; reliance--beleif in one's own

Next we completed Peer Review for our Newspaper Articles. If you missed class, you'll have to make it up on your own.

Then we talked about Resume Writing. Within Resume Writing we read some information on Parallelism and completed some practice exercises. You'll need to make this up if you missed class. Then we talked through the Resume assignment sheet and you had the rest of class to complete the planning sheet and draft of your resume. The draft must be in class next time (Thursday) for Peer Review!

3-30-09: Resumes (B Days)

Today we started out with our punctual piece, for which you read through some information on Parallel Structure in Business Writing and completed some practice exercises. You'll need to make up this assignment if you weren't in class.

Then we talked about resumes. We talked through the assignment sheet, then you were given the rest of class to complete the planning sheet and a draft. If you finished, you completed Peer Review. If not, you must have your draft IN CLASS next time for Peer Review!

3-27-09: Newspaper Articles (A Days)

Your Book for outside reading was due today! Remember it can be anything you want as long as it is an actual novel and it is over 100 pages.

For our Punctual Piece we looked at pronoun agreement. Remember everybody is singular so it is paired with he or she! We completed some practice exercises--you'll want to make those up!

Next we talked about Newspaper Writing. We read a newspaper article and talked about the characteristics of Newspaper Writing. In groups you broke down the article we read into its components.

Then you completed the Newspaper Planning Sheet and began drafting your article. If you missed class, you will want to have a draft done for Tuesday!

For Tuesday:
1. Complete the draft of your Newspaper Article so it's ready for Peer Review. Remember, you cannot make up the Draft points if you don't have it done!

3-26-09: Work Day (B Days)

Your Book for outside reading was due today! Remember it can be anything you want as long as it is an actual novel and it is over 100 pages.

3-25-09: Writing Lab Day (A Days)

Today we started class with our punctual piece. We completed a few more vocabulary words looking at two new roots. Here's the definitions if you missed:

Today we started class with our punctual piece. We completed a few more vocabulary words looking at two new roots. Here's the definitions if you missed:

Today we started class with our punctual piece. We learned six new vocabulary words from two new roots. Check your folder to get those!

Then we started writing our Multi-genre Research Papers. We began with the introduction, which is a PowerPoint Presentation. We talked through the characteristics of good PowerPoint presentations. Then you planned your presentation, drafted it, and completed Peer Review. Finally you completed the Rationale Card.

Next week, when we go to the Computer Lab, you will have the chance to type it all up in professional final form!

3-20-09: PowerPoint Presentations (B Days)

Today we started class with our punctual piece. We learned six new vocabulary words from two new roots. Check your folder to get those!

Then we started writing our Multi-genre Research Papers. We began with the introduction, which is a PowerPoint Presentation. We talked through the characteristics of good PowerPoint presentations. Then you planned your presentation, drafted it, and completed Peer Review. Finally you completed the Rationale Card.

Next week, when we go to the Computer Lab, you will have the chance to type it all up in professional final form!

3-19-09: Planning Day (A Days)

Today we started class with our punctual piece: Using the research you have collected and now analyzed, write an instant version of your research paper in 7-8 sentences.

Then we started planning our Research Papers. First we completed the Organization Template to map out our introduction and thesis, all three supports, and the conclusion.

After we mapped out our papers, we talked about how we are going to write the paper. This will not be a traditional research paper, but instead we are going to present our research in multiple genres--something called a Multi-genre Research Paper. We talked about the expectations and then completed the Genre Planning sheet.

It is essential that you get caught up if you are behind. We will begin writing the Research Paper next class!

For Monday:
1. Bring hall passes and late work passes
2. Complete the Genre Planning Sheet if you didn't finish in class
3. Complete the Organization Template and Genre Planning Sheet if you missed class

3-13-09: More Research (A Days)

Today we turned in ALL of our missing work. Today was the last day. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

First thing, we went to the library to continue our research. Just like last time you were to find three sources, print them off in their entirety or check them out. IF YOU MISSED CLASS, YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS UP, THIS ASSIGNMENT GOES ON 3RD TERM'S GRADE!!

Now you should have six (6) sources and three (3) different types. If you are behind, please get this done ASAP or you will be behind for next term.

Then we came back to class and started working on the Research Reading portion of the sources. We completed two Research Reading Charts. So, if you didn't finish or if you missed class you will want to finish two charts before Tuesday.

3-12-09: More Research (B Days)

Today we turned in missing work. Remeber the last day is Friday, March 13th at 3:00 PM. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!

Before we went to the library today, we started reading the sources we found last class and completing the Research Reading Charts for those sources.

Then we continued to research our topics in the library. Just like last time you were to PRINT out three research soruces that you found online or CHECKOUT three books you found in the library or a combination of the the two. IF YOU MISSED CLASS, YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE THIS UP. THIS ASSIGNMENT GOES ON 3RD TERM'S GRADE!

Now you have 6 sources total! And at least three different types of sources. Get this done ASAP, or you'll be behind for next term.

3-6-09: Night p.99-109 (A Days)

Today we handed in our Reading Questions for p.99-109 and Writer's Notebook #7, so if you missed class, get those in ASAP!

We started class with our Punctual Piece:
What will you remember about the novel Night? How come?

Then we had reading time and a quiz on p. 99-109.

Next to finish up the novel we completed a Found Poem. If you missed class, you will need to make up this assignment.

3-5-09: Night p. 99-109 (B Days)

Today we turned in Night p.99-109 questions and Writer's Notebook #7, so if you missed class get those in ASAP!

We started off the day with our punctual piece:

Answer both questions: (at least 3 sentences for each question).
-What causes do you strongly believe in? Connect with? Want to learn more about?
-If you could get a message across to a large group of people, who would those people be? What would your message be?

Then we took a reading quiz on p.99-109.

Next we read talked through the punctual piece and proceeded to read "The Perils of Indifference," Elie Wiesel's speech he delivered when he received the Nobel Peace Prize. We discussed how Wiesel's cause is to fight indifference and to encourage individuals to stand up for what is right and fight against genocide. This is something that Elie has devoted his life to, and is something he is passionate about.

Next we again thought about what we are passionate about, and selected two topics for research we will be starting next week. Then we formed questions about those two topics on the Topic->Question Assignment. (If you missed class, make sure you make this up right away!) If you are still having a hard time thinking of a topic, check out these topic ideas.

3-4-09: Night p.81-98 (A Days)

Today we turned in Night p.81-98 questions, so if you missed class get those in ASAP!

We started off the day with our punctual piece:

Today we turned in Night p. 63-80 questions and Writer's Notebook #6, so if you missed class get those turned in!

For the remaining class time we did a Night Hunt activity in which you were required to complete 3 of 6 tasks. You could do two additional tasks for extra credit. If you were absent, you will need to complete 3 of the tasks to receive your points for today's activities--see the website for details.
