10-29-08: Urban Legends (A Days)

Today we started off with our punctual piece in which we tried to discover the pattern or the commonality that 3 sentences have in common. Then you wrote three more sentences modeled after the examples.

The examples:
In September 1938, a young man who was expecting a letter was waiting on the porch.

As they drive, the fiancee begins to cry and talk about their separation.

Later, the man's letter arrives.

Next we talked about the characteristics of Urban Legends. How ULs are from a friend of a friend of a friend, etc. ULs are scary because they could potentially be true; they happen to our friends of friends--or real people; and they generally involve real-life everyday scenarios.

But remember, not all ULs are scary or creepy. Some can be heartwarming, hopeful, inspiring, but it doesn't mean it's true....Just like those emails that are being sent out right now that say you have inherited a large sum of money from your long lost aunt or uncle in Africa. Yeah, not scary, but also not true.

While we read the ULs we practiced picking out the theme and reading them with a certain perspective. This is/was in preparation for your new assignment in class on Friday when we begin reading Folktales in Literature Circles, where each person will read each folktale with a different role.

Hope you liked the Urban Legends--perfect for Halloween. Now go spread 'em! ;) We all know the truth.

For Friday:
1. Remember to bring you book because we'll have time in class to read--and you get points for having it here!
2. Writer's Notebook #1 is DUE! If you have questions, please come talk to me BEFORE Friday!
